I insist on taking proper food for this expedition. The men often fall ill and suffer fever, so I have decided to take live animals.
我坚持认为，这次探险要携带合适的食物。水手经常生病发烧，因此我决定带活的动物。
Live animals? I didn’ t know we were going to take live animals with us, Sir.
活的动物？我还不知道我们要带活的动物，先生。
That’s right. We will take 10 pigs, 10 sheep and sixty chickens. The chickens can eat the food that we would otherwise throw away. They will provide us with eggs and meat.
没错。我们要带上10头猪、10只羊还有60只鸡。鸡吃我们的剩饭剩菜。它们为我们提供蛋和肉。
What about vegetables, Sir? They usually go bad as soon as we are at sea.
那些蔬菜怎么办呢，先生？通常是刚一出海它们就会坏掉的。
I have decided to take a lot of cabbage in vinegar.
我已决定带大量的醋泡白菜。
I’ve never heard of that, Sir. Will the men enjoy eating it, Sir?
我还从来没听说过这样的事儿，先生。水手们会爱吃吗，先生？
I shall insist that they do from now on. Eating cabbage will keep them healthy.
我要他们从现在起就吃（醋泡白菜）。吃白菜会使他们的身体保持健康的。
Have you decided which boat to take, Sir?
先生，您决定用哪只船了吗？
We will take the Endeavour. It is a good, strong ship, though not very fast. There will be a lot of room below for stores.
我们用“奋力号”。它虽然速度不算快，但却是一只完好、结实的船。船体下面有很多地方还可以放储存品。
Is there anything else that you want me to get?
您还要我买别的东西吗？
Yes. I suggest taking a lot of vinegar.
是的。我建议多带些醋。
Why vinegar, Sir, if I may ask?
先生，要是我能问的话，您为什么要带醋呢？
We will use it for cleaning the inside of the ship. If we do this, we shall have less sickness. Please get me 300 litres. I think that will be enough.
我们将要用醋清理船舱。如果我们这样做的话，我们就会少生些病。请给我购买300升。我想这就够了。
