They called him James and loved him very much.
他们为他取名詹姆斯，他们非常爱他。
But there was something wrong with the child.
但是，这孩子有点毛病。
He did everything very slowly.
他做什么都很慢。
His parents did not know what was wrong.
他的父母亲不知道他有什么毛病。
So one day they took him to a doctor.
于是有一天他们带他去看医生。
The doctor found that there was something wrong with James’ eyes.
医生发现詹姆斯的眼睛有毛病。
He could not see anything.
他看不见任何东西。
The doctor said he could do nothing to help him.
医生说他对此无能为力。
Mr and Mrs Shute were very sad. But what could they do?
舒特先生和夫人非常难过。但他们有什么办法呢？
James grew bigger every day.
詹姆斯一天天长大。
He was very healthy and happy, but he could not look after himself.
他很健康，非常欢快。但不能照料自己。
He could not wash himself or get dressed.Instead, his sister or his parents had to help him.
他自己不能洗澡或穿衣服，他的姐姐或父母亲就只好帮他的忙。
One day, the Shutes heard that there was a good doctor in a town not far away.
有一天，舒特家人听说不远的镇上有一位好医生。
Maybe he could help James. So they took the boy to visit him.
也许他能给詹姆斯治病。于是他们带着詹姆斯去找他。
The doctor looked over James and asked the Shutes many questions.
医生给詹姆斯作了检查并问了舒特家人许多问题。
At last he said,I think I can help him. He’ll be OK if I do one small operation.
“我想我能治他的病。只要我给他做一个小手术，他就会好的。”
Just one small operation? Yes, yes. Do it, doctor!
只是一个小手术？“好的，好的。给他做吧，医生！”
One minute
……two minutes……three……four……ten minutes。 1分钟……2分钟……3……4……10分钟。
And then, James could see! How happy everyone was!
紧接着，詹姆斯能看见了！大家多么高兴啊！

he said. But I don’t have many friends, and I don’t enjoy myself very much. I don’t know why!

Look at Mr Thin. He was poor. He didn’t have much money.
瞧瘦先生。他很穷。他没有很多钱。
So he couldn’t buy himself lots of good things. But he had lots of friends instead.
所以他不能给自己买很多好东西。可是他却有许多朋友。
I’m poor, but I always enjoy myself! he said. I don’t know why!
“我很穷，但我总是过得很愉快！”他说，“我不懂为什么！”
An American Boy
一个美国男孩
The Shute family lived in the southern part of the USA.
舒特一家住在美国南部。
Mr Shute was a farm worker, and he didn’t have much money.
舒特先生是个农场工人，他挣不到很多钱。
.Mr and Mrs Shute had a daughter called Jane.
舒特先生和夫人有一个女儿，名叫简。
Then they had a second child-a son. How happy they were!
后来他们有了第2个孩子一个儿子。他们多么高兴啊！
